The show revolves around a corporation running numerous underground establishments across the globe which program individuals referred to as Actives with temporary personalities and skills. Wealthy clients hire Actives at great expense for various purposes. The series follows the Active known as Echo, on her journey towards self-awareness.

This is a story about Eco. She is a doll or assets of the Los Angeles Dollhouse, one of the many objects belonging Rossum Corporation, which employs people to fulfill the desires of the rich. These desires are very diverse: from romantic to criminal activities with an increased risk for life. Each doll have erased original memories and consciousness make programmed at new memories and skills for each mission. Assets like Eco are volunteers who gave their bodies and minds for the corporation on a period of 5 years, during which their identities are kept stored on the hard drive in exchange for a huge amount of money and a solution to their problem in life. Eco is unique in that she has retained the crumbs of memories after erasing her identity, and gradually begins to develop, are increasingly aware of who she is.

An the second season we see a post-apocalyptic future where Dollhouse technology by erasing personality are ubiquitous and that put an end to mankind. Also in the second season shows that the ultimate goal of Rossum corporation is a control of national governments and the innocent people who have no connection with the Dollhouse. For Army developed the technology of collective intelligence. At the end of the series shows that despite all the efforts failed to stop the spread of technology erasing the individual. Mad Topher develops various methods termination technology, but its made with the great sacrifice to themselves and others. The series ends with the restoration of individuals, while the Earth still lies in ruins.
