In an alternative world where all humans have animal companions called dæmons, which are the manifestation of the human soul, a young orphan living with the tutors at Jordan College, Oxford discovers a dangerous secret that involves Lord Asriel and Marisa Coulter. In her search for her missing friend, she uncovers a slew of kidnappings and its link to the mysterious substance called Dust.

The events take place in a world where technological progress and magic coexist with each other. The main character is an orphan girl Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen), who lives in Oxford. She learns in season 1 that her uncle, the powerful Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) has found the mystical Dust and wants to study it. But Lyra was given to educate the insidious Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson). The girl has to run away from her and go north, in search of her uncle and many abducted children. The heroine travels through parallel worlds, meets many fantastic creatures, including witches and armoured polar bears. Lyra must find the missing friend, and at the same time find out what kind of evil power abducts children.
