The series tells the story of an unassuming American family drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation. Bassam "Barry" Al Fayeed, the younger son of the dictator of a war-torn nation, ends a self-imposed 20-year exile to return to his homeland, accompanied by his American wife and children, for his nephew's wedding. Barry’s reluctant homecoming leads to a dramatic clash of cultures as he is thrown back into the familial and national politics of his youth.
The story is set in some fictional country Abuddin, possibly in the Middle East. There is an authoritarian power in this mysterious rich country. But the population is outrageous because of lack of either freedom, or wealth, or severe religious conditions. Barry-Al-Fayeed is a second son of Abuddinâ€™s dictator. Twenty years ago or so he left his ancestral house, going on his self-willed exile to the Unites States. Barry establishes himself as a good pediatrician, marries an American and has two teenagers. His peaceful life in Los-Angeles ends, when he is invited to his native country for his nephewâ€™s wedding. Barry canâ€™t reject the invitation and sets off with his family there. But the protagonist is not ready for this journey and meeting with his relatives yet. He and his family will face a hard challenge of a profound culture clash and reluctant immersion into life, which is different from the one in the USA and for which they are not prepared. Molly does her best to free her beloved husband from imprisonment, and her leave for the USA turns into struggle to tune herself to life without him. Thus, Samira and Ihab fall back upon some drastic measures. Jamal also has to face the bereavement. He is baffled by Tariqâ€™s tactics of war. Meanwhile Leila attempts to turn Abbudin into a cultural center. Will she able to do it? Barry flees the prison and tries to adjust a new life of a refugee. However, the young Barry would prefer to choose for himself a different way of life. A new page of life young man discovered that in 16 years, moved to the United States. 20 years passed in the territory of that State. During this period, the protagonist has achieved quite a lot. He got the desired job, became a husband and father. In general, his life has been successful, if not the past that suddenly "knocked on the door." One day, Barry has received an invitation from the native land of his nephew. He asks him to come to his own wedding. Barry understands that he could not miss such an important ceremony. Therefore, decides to go to his native land with his family. At home, the reception was not at all close to the warm, because once Barry refused to support the methods of his father and ran away from the family. Now his elder brother number one contender to the throne of his father. Shortly after his father's death, he achieves his goal, taking his place on the throne.
